Before Skype I used chat through msn messenger but soon found out that my peers would start switching to Skype.
So I gave it a shot. Skype in my opinion is a platform mainly built for video chat...but a basic text chat isn't impossible.

Once you have downloaded skype just call the skype call testing service. There your microphone will be tested and after that you are ready to go.
